Polarization is a concept that was made so much more clear and tangible to us through the modality of IFS (Internal Family Systems). Once you understand polarizations– you start to see where they exist…. which is everywhere! (In the larger society and inside of us)
Polarization: An internal dynamic where two or more parts are in conflict.
These polarized parts of us are in turmoil because they have conflicting ideas of:
- what we need
- the right way to fix/help/support
- the perspective to have whats safe/whats not
- how to feel
- what we should pursue
- what we should share with people
- how to show up in the world
This is why it’s so common as a human to feel torn, conflicted, confused and even at war inside our own minds.
Examples of polarizations that can exist in the same person:
- overachiever + fatigue
- insecure + cocky
- socially unsure + over-talker
- shame-filled + class clown
- anxiety + perfectionist
- needy + physical strength
- freedom-loving + controlling
- hopeful + jaded
- excited + scared
Each part of a polarization has very different thoughts/feelings and experiences and subsequently impacts the other part. There is an interplay between polarizations, creating tension, confusion, frustration, suffering and increasing extremes.
Bringing light to our polarizations, and normalizing them….can help us get closer to understanding the experience of each part, and guiding them to peaceful, supportive way for the needs of all parts to be met.
